Get Your Ontario Driver’s License with Confidence!

If you’re looking to get your license in Ontario, the journey begins as soon as you turn 16. Ontario’s graduated licensing system, introduced in 1994, ensures that new drivers gain experience and confidence over three progressive stages: G1, G2, and G.

1. Start with the Driver’s Handbook

You can find this essential guide at most bookstores, convenience stores, MTO centers, and other locations. Study the handbook thoroughly to prepare for your written G1 exam.

2. Pass Your G1 Exam

On or after your 16th birthday, head to your nearest Ministry of Transportation office with $158.25 and two pieces of ID to take your G1 exam. Once you pass, you’ll receive your G1 license and can start building your driving experience.

G1 License Conditions

The G1 license is designed to help you learn safely. Here are the key rules you must follow:

Accompanied Driving: A driver with at least 4 years of G-class experience must be in the car with you at all times.

No Late-Night Driving: Driving is not allowed between midnight and 5 a.m.

Highway Restrictions: You may not drive on highways with speed limits of 80 km/h or higher, including all 400-series highways, unless accompanied by a licensed driving instructor.

Zero Alcohol: You must maintain a blood alcohol level of 0.00%.

Seat Belt Requirement: You may only carry as many passengers as there are seat belts.

Reduce Your Waiting Period with Canadian Standard Driving School!

If you complete an approved driving course like ours, you can shorten the waiting period to your first road test from 12 months to just 8 months! This can help you progress to your G2 license sooner and with greater skill.

3. Advance to Your G2 License

After passing your first road test, you’ll receive your G2 license. While there are still some restrictions, they’re less limiting than the G1 conditions:

Zero Alcohol: Continue to maintain a 0.00% blood alcohol level.

Seat Belt Requirement: Ensure you have no more passengers than available seat belts.
